My Art Walk in Atlanta

Here I am sitting in a Sam Maloof chair in shop in the Highlands section of Atlanta, Georgia. It was a family trip. I have kinfolk down there. Atlanta is a cultural city, with museums and statues all over. I guess you could say I took a walking tour, since I hoofed it from midtown to  this area, a few miles in that southern humidity, observing as I went. 

You might ask why I mention the chair?  Sam Maloof was a premier American furniture maker, winning prizes and awards in his lifetime. Working in California, he was 92 when he passed, not so very long ago.

A friend of mine here in Sedona owns a Maloof chair, not unlike this unfinished one in the photo. I have had the pleasure of  sitting in a smooth, fiddle back maple armed seat. It fits the human form. It is functional art. Since I work in clay, often my ceramics have function, such as  my porcelain bowls. To take the ordinary and make it the extra ordinary. Isn't that what art is all about? 

I also quite liked this public sculpture of the car upside down in this tall piece of marble, I would guess. I did not catch the artist's name, but it sure caught my attention. Two sides of  creative expression I found on my walk in Atlanta
